Accessible days out and tips for families this summer

Summer can be a challenging time for families with disabled or seriously ill children, with changes in routine, crowded places and overwhelm in warmer weather. Finding suitable family days out, that are right for your whole family, and fully accessible venues and activities can be time-consuming.

In our recent research* 79% of families said they would like to spend more time on days out and short breaks with family and friends.

Only 26% of families* said they can get the information they need before deciding if a place is accessible to their child or young person before they go.

Where to find accessible days out?

And have you tried Euan’s guide? This charity provides information and reviews on disabled access. You can search a location or specific venue to read reviews and see what facilities are offered.

NHS Better Health also have information for accessible family activities both at home, and out and about.

Access cards

Families raising disabled children can also apply for access cards to gain discounted or carer passes to venues and events across the UK.

The Max Card is a discount card for foster families and families of children with additional needs. It can be used at specified venues across the UK to get free or discounted admission.

The CEA Card gives a complimentary ticket to someone going with a disabled person when they visit a participating cinema.

“We normally have to do a bit of planning. It depends on where we’re going, if they’ve got a website, and if they’ve got a good section that tells you about accessibility. It’s quite handy when I can show my son pictures and stuff.”

Appling for free days out and events

It’s also worth checking out initiatives that allow families to nominate their disabled or seriously ill child for an unforgettable day out:

• Merlin’s Magic Wand are the children’s charity partner of Merlin Entertainments. They provide gifted/free magical days out for children to visit one of their 140+ Merlin attractions.
• The Barrie Wells Trust ‘Box4Kids’ initiative gives families raising a disabled or seriously ill child, the chance to make unforgettable memories. They work with executive box holders who donate their VIP box for an event, to enjoy a special day out.

Discover Digital summer festival – events at home

This summer, our very own Discover Digital summer festival returns. This free digital festival offers disabled and seriously ill children, and their families, the opportunity to join many online creative workshops. They’ll learn new skills, have fun and get direct support.
